Health education programs for the Kuwaiti population in order to prevent Diabetes and other Chronic Diseases.
Health education programs for the Kuwaiti population aim to reduce the rapid rise of Type 2 Diabetes and other chronic diseases in Kuwait; those are due to sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles. Knowledge of the prevention, risks and management of these diseases will be offered to youngsters, the general population, and the population most at risk, in order that individuals can make a conscious decision on their lifestyles to reduce their risk of developing such diseases.
Health Awareness Media Tools
Media technology is a powerful tool to raise awareness of healthy lifestyles that introduce important behaviors in relation to prevention of diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Television is a potent media tool that reaches a large majority of any population, particularly in Middle Eastern countries where television plays a pivotal role in any social or family gathering. Airing entertaining and informative short animations that illustrate the causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes and chronic diseases on local and satellite television stations will educate the population and empower them to make healthy lifestyle decisions. Such ‘info-tainment’ animations would conform to the cultural norms of the country and contain dynamic popular music to capture the viewers’ attention so that they can look forward to watching each animation segment. Each animation would be approximately 60 seconds in duration, with a fun, friendly and informative message that will illustrate the health issues in a simple graphic way, in order to convince the audience of the message being delivered. On occasion, famous Arab celebrities will appear at the end of some of the animations to condone the message.
Other media tools to be used include local and international radio channels aimed at youths and the general population, that portray the message of the television animations through a musical jingle, and regular talk shows with celebrities and the public. Furthermore, printed media such as teenage magazines and comic books will be used to simply illustrate the havoc created by junk foods and sedentary lifestyles on health.
Internet has become a powerful tool for any type of education and can be used to illustrate the health messages on an informative and colorful website that can be reached from any of the internet search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and so forth. Health education messages should also be posted on different social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, so that health education becomes a common entity that is simply everywhere to be seen, heard and utilized.
Health professionals such as doctors, nurses, and nutritionists involved in primary care should be familiar with the national health messages being broadcast, and reiterate them with their patients and clients. Physical trainers should also be trained in nutritional aspects to advise their clients on their diet. Training on the prevention, risks and management of diabetes and other chronic diseases should be mandatory to those health professionals and physical trainers, so that they can advise their patients on the correct course of action for prevention and treatment of these diseases.
